FC Durham U8

FC Durham U8 Skill Centre

This stage is in line with the Fundamentals stage of LTPD.

At this age group the primary focus is on the development of the core techniques listed in the U8 Overview and Curriculum and building a passion for soccer!

Emphasizing wins and losses at this stage is discouraged. Often the result of the game can come at the expense of learning the core techniques.

There is no maximum number of players permitted in the program and the program is completely open, following the open roster principle (based on the number of players that attend fall open sessions the program may be limited to 1 game day team).  On game day the maximum roster of each team is 10.  Players will participate in a series of festivals which follow the LTPD principles. Evaluation of these players will be continuous with 2 written player evaluations per year.  Age group will operate under a 44-week calendar, with a 3:1 training to game ratio in outdoor and 2:1 training to game ratio in indoor.  A 1:7 coach to player ratio is used to provide maximum attention.   FCD uses the Player Development Model for sessions regardless of the number of players in the program.   As FCD operates with a holistic approach it is critical that physical literacy and fundamental movement training takes place weekly within the training sessions.  Training sessions are 60 minutes in length.

Coaching Methodology

  • Small sided games – let the game be the teacher.
  • Player Centred – allow the players to make decisions.
  • Use key factors to teach the players.
  • Demonstrate what you would like the players to do.
  • Keep information positive, brief and concise.
  • Create a positive learning environment.
  • Set appropriate challenges.
  • Sessions should have a theme.
  • Use a variety of interventions e.g. Q&A, Guided Discovery, Command.
  • Consider a young player’s self esteem.
  • Avoid lines, lectures and laps.
